THE LIFE/SOFT SKILLS FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT MASTERY SUCCESS MINDSET AND WEALTH CREATION

8 weeks program – 3 groups of 40 students per year

Life/Soft Skills Training for Personal Mastery, Success Mindset and Wealth Creation is considered as a critical success factor in the training of youth for the world of work and personal enterprise development in the 21st Century and beyond, especially in this time of rapid technological change that is forcing a new pedagogy to meet the needs of emerging labour market inspire by these technological advancements. Life skills training for nurturing a new mindset of abundance must be nurtured and promoted as part of a new critical competency model, alongside the technical competency training in future skills of the learners of the 21st century and beyond.

This Centre will provide training for all participants as a common requirement in the training of the skills required for the future. This Centre will focus on:

BLACK YOUTH CULTURAL IDENTITY TRAINING PROGRAM (AN AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM)

8 weeks program – 3 groups of 40 students per year

  1. Introduction
    Participants will undertake a course of training to raise the level of consciousness of the importance of the black identity and its contribution to human development nationally and globally.
  2. Course Objectives
    This training course and related modules are designed to: –
    1) To help to reduce the level of vulnerabilities facing black youths and to help them build resiliency to thrive and prosper.
    2) build consciousness awareness, resiliency and cultural.
    competencies among black youths in the mentorship program
    3) To help mentees to understand the importance of human dignity as an inalienable and inherent human right. That should be protected and valued.
    4) Exposed black youth to the importance of their cultural heritage and the contribution of Black people to the social, political, economic scientific and technological contribution to global development.
    5) To raise the level of consciousness among black youth as to the importance of self-development, personal mastery and education in wealth creation and building a legacy of value in the black community.
    6) Exposing black youths to the valuable contribution of black leaders to human development and change globally.
  3. Course Duration
    Each course identified below will be delivered between 12 and 30 hours depending on content.
  4. Critical Learning Outcomes 

    On completion of the training program, participants are expected to: –

    1) increase their conscious awareness of the importance of and contribution of black people and the black identity and cultural heritage in national and global development.
    2) Increase their cultural competencies
    3) Increase their self-confidence, self-worth and self-love.
    4) Improve their critical thinking and analytical skills
    5) Embrace the black identity

  5. Methods of Delivery

The training program will be delivered through a variety of methodologies to include but not limited to the following: –
Case-studies, lecturers, video presentation, group discussions, role-playing

6. Methods of Assessment
Participants will be assessed through group presentations, individual case-study presentations and multiple-choice assessment paper.
The program will be assessed by the participants to determine the impact of training delivery as well as the impact on participants’ anticipated learning outcomes.

7. Certificate of Achievement
A Certification of Achievement will be awarded to participants who successfully completed all training sessions and attaining a minimum of 60% passing grade in the written assessment.

Outline of the OCDT Black Identity Training Modules

These courses and related modules will be implemented by OCDT in collaboration with our select training facilitators.
1. Understanding Concepts and Terminologies Used to Describe Being Black

In this module mentees will be taught the different concepts used to describe the black cultural identity in this multicultural country of Canada, to enable mentees to develop a healthy sense of themselves as racial beings and of their Blackness in a diverse socio-economic and sociopolitical environment.
Such concepts will include: –

  • Cultural identity
  • Cultural Humility
  • Cultural Competence
  • Cultural Heritage
  • Human dignity
  • Cultural tolerance

2. Models of Black Racial Identity Development
This module will provide mentees with an understanding of different models that are used to describe the Black racial identity. This will enable them to see how different researchers conceptualize the black identity.

3. Discovering and Getting to Know Me: A Journey into Mind, Body and Soul/Spirit.
This module will allow mentees to discover their true skills, talents and passions through group coaching measures. Such discovery will allow them to focus or re-focus on their life’ purpose, to the extent that they can explore the opportunities to use those skills and talents to develop enterprising options for income-generating opportunities and wealth creation.

4. Embracing the Black Identity: An Inside Job

Mentees will be exposed to coaching questions which will guide them into finding answers from within that will explain their lived experiences.

Mentees will be exposed to personal development training strategies that build self-confidence, self-esteem, self-worth and self-love that will allow them to embrace who they are. This will help them to discover that they are more than the colour of their skin.

5. Beyond the Colour of the Skin: The Cultural Value of Being Black
Black racial identity development theory explains the processes by which Black people develop a healthy sense of themselves as racial beings and of their Blackness in a toxic sociopolitical environment.

6. What Does it mean to be Black in a Multi-cultural Society such as Toronto: What is Your Story?
An exploration of personal stories of growing up in Canada and being of an African-Caribbean Heritage. Mentees will be questioned using coaching tools and questioning strategies that will allow them to go deep within to find answers to a select group of questions as to the internal

and external factors that increase their vulnerabilities. Such exploration will allow then to discover innate coping skills.

7. Unmasking: Truth Revealed, Understanding prejudices and biases

  • Dealing with black stereotypes
  • Truths About In-equalities in Social and Economic Developments Between Blacks and Other Ethnic Groups

Mentees will be exposed to comparative research findings of the income and economic performance of blacks and black men in particular in the workplace; the impact of black racism on income levels and that income disparity in wealth creation in the black community.

8. Cultural Humility and Cultural competencies
In this Module, mentees will be exposed to strategies of developing Cultural Humility and Cultural competencies to be able to engage and understand how to live mindfully, with resiliency

  • Cultural humility is at the heart of being aware of our biases, prejudices, and privileges.
  • Cultural humility encourages collaborative engagement, expressed compassion for others, and an endorsement of equality. Individuals and communities that have typically been oppressed should be rich sources of expertise and teachers o the content of their culture.

9. Knowing the Black Heroes and Heroines: Understanding Their Contributions to National and Global Economic, Social, Political, Scientific and Technological Development-

  • Participants will be exposed to some influential black leaders who have made great contributions to social, economic, science and technology and political development of the human family. This is very important for the development of black pride and valorization of the black cultural heritage and black legacy.
  • Their contributions have been documented and will be given as handout (resource reference materials) to mentees. (See Appendices 4 and 5 below).
GROUP COACHING AND MENTORSHIP EMPOWERMENT TRAINING STRATEGY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUCCESS AND GROWTH MINDSET

8 weeks program – 3 groups of 40 students per year

This aspect of the training is to empower black youths to ensure that they can rise out of the systemic barriers and vulnerabilities that seem to settle them into the slavish mindset of lack in preference for a mindset of abundance. Such a training focus will assist in building the mental capacity and preparedness for success in academics, career and life. The training modules are as follows: –

  1. Youth Group Coaching, and Motivation Program for the Development of a Success Mindset. (16 hours)

Based on its value proposition the OCDT provides start-ups and practicing with the opportunity to undertake learning by doing knowledge enhancement skills that validate their practice experiences. These courses will be implemented by OCDT in collaboration with its select trainers/training facilitators.
